Disgraced Teacher Claims Misogyny While Facing Allegations She Abused Schoolboy 50 Times
Christina Formella claims she is being unfairly portrayed as a “predator” and says she’s the target of misogynistic, sexist scrutiny.
The 30-year-old former Illinois high school special education teacher and soccer coach was arrested in March for allegedly sexually abusing a student more than 45 times.
Formella and her supporters argue that the case has spiraled into a misogynistic situation because of her gender and the way she looks.
- Christina Formella, a former Illinois teacher, faces over 50 charges for allegedly abusing a teenage student multiple times from 2023 to 2024.
- Formella and her supporters claim misogyny drives public and media focus on her appearance instead of legal facts and evidence.
- The alleged abuse began after Formella privately tutored the boy she coached and continued through her engagement and marriage.
- Her family says media coverage has become invasive, with Formella stalked by content creators even into church, causing distress.
- Despite accusations, Formella denies guilt, claiming blackmail, while her husband and in-laws publicly support her at hearings.

“It’s a spectacle — a public ritual that punishes women not for what they’ve done, but for how they’re perceived,” a rep for Formella’s family told The New York Post in a statement Thursday.
“When men face accusations, we discuss evidence and procedure. When women face accusations, we attack their character, their choices, and their worth as human beings. This isn’t justice — it’s gender-based persecution disguised as accountability,” they added.
Formella is accused of grooming a 14-year-old student and initiating a months-long sexual relationship that began when he turned 15.
He was on a soccer team she coached, but after he was injured, Formella allegedly began tutoring him privately before school.
In March, she faced charges of one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, one count of criminal sexual assault, and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
In June, she was hit with 52 additional charges: 20 counts of criminal sexual assault, 20 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, six counts of indecent solicitation of a child, and six counts of grooming.

Formella was taken into custody after the alleged victim’s mother reportedly found numerous text messages on his phone, in which the two discussed having sex at least 45 times.
This included incidents in school classrooms and several at the home she shared with her husband, Michael Formella.
The teenage boy and his mother then visited a local police station in Downers Grove to report that the child had been sexually abused, according to police.
She denied the alleged abuse when questioned by police.
Prosecutors allege the majority of the encounters took place at Illinois’ Downers Grove High School, where she taught, and have cited dozens of text messages, including one where Formella allegedly wrote, “I love having sex with you.”

The alleged grooming and affair began around 2023. It continued through her engagement and ended after the boy called it off in September 2024, weeks after she married her college sweetheart, Michael Formella.
Prosecutors further claim Formella had plotted to steal millions from her husband’s family and run away with the teenage boy.
She allegedly expressed undying love for the boy. After their breakup, she wrote about the boy in her diary, blaming the teenager for her emotional turmoil, but also hoping that they would still spend their lives together.
Her legal team argues that public discourse has focused less on the evidence and more on her looks and femininity.
The representative for the family continued:
“Instead of discussing facts or law, public discourse fixates on Christina’s appearance, her private life, even her lipstick — as if those details bear on guilt or innocence,” they said.
“Christina has been splintered into internet caricatures — ‘predator,’ ‘unfaithful wife,’ ‘hypocrite. ’”

Her family said the coverage of Formella’s alleged crime has turned into “real-world stalking,” where she has been tailed by “so-called content creators” when she goes out, and even been followed into church, “violating the sanctity of worship and terrorizing her family.”
“Christina’s case isn’t being ‘covered’ — she’s being hunted,” the statement said. “Reckless speculation, misinformation, and theatrical coverage do nothing to serve justice and set hard-won respect for women back decades,” the statement concluded.
She has denied the accusations, telling investigators she was being blackmailed for being “good-looking” and nice.
The husband has stood by her since the arrest, even joining his wife hand-in-hand for each of her hearings so far. Her in-laws have also joined Formella at several of her appearances.

Formella has been released with an ankle monitor and ordered to remain at least 5,000 feet from the teen.
Formella’s attorney requested that the buffer zone be reduced to 2,500 feet, arguing that the teen’s workplace is within a mile of her residence. However, the judge denied this request during a Wednesday hearing.
She now lives at her parents’ home.
Formella attended the DuPage County Courthouse court hearing with her husband, a former baseball player at Concordia University of Chicago, where the couple met. He previously told investigators he did not know about the alleged relationship.
However, authorities claim Formella maintained contact with the teen during family trips, including while on vacation in Italy.
Formella’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 4.
